This Weekend: How Will You Celebrate Khmer New Year?

PHNOM PENH: After two years of staying home to avoid the spread of Covid-19, the Kingdom of Cambodia is ready to welcome Princess Keriney Devi, the Year of the Tiger. Celebrations have already started early with each provinces doing its own versions of Songkran.

Last weekend, Bonn Phum celebrated Khmer New Year for three days at Factory Phnom Penh. This weekend 8-10 April, Bonn Phum will celebrate at Wat Svay An-datte. There will be food, music, and games at the pagoda where the villagers and city dwellers can have fun together.

Ministry of Tourism in partnership with KHBMedia and Pepsi is hosting the longest celebration from 6-10 April at Moradok Techo National Stadium. There will be various exhibitions of food, local products, books, and many more. Throughout the day, there will be popular Khmer games and social Khmer dances. There will be a pageant, Kun Khmer, Bokator, and challenges for Tik Tok stars to compete for the first-ever Tik Tok Award to raise funds for Kantha Bopha children’s hospital.

The Olympia Mall will also host a weekend of fun popular games, traditional dance, social dance, Kun Khmer, and many more from 9-10 April. Olympia Mall has everything from cinema, restaurants, clothing stores, and everything for everyone.

If walking through the crowd is still uneasy for you, the “White Building” is opening this 7 April. You can support the local movies now that cinemas are allowed to stay open after two years of the Covid-19 crisis.
